gpiGPI Generation Movie Club - Summer 2009

We are please to announce the launch of our monthly movie club at the GPI (George Padmore Institute). Movie Club is organised by GPI Generation. GPI Generation is a new group at the GPI encouraging participation from young people in the activities of the Institute. In 2007 GPI Generation showed the film Dream to Change the World to a group of young people and held a discussion about their responses to John La Rose's legacy and their own lives and work. Since then they have held a number of discussion meetings and are producing a short documentary featuring Irma La Rose speaking of her early life in Trinidad and Venezuela.

Race in the USA - with a Black President in the White house our first 2 movies take a look at issues of race in the USA. We’ll see how things have changed in the last 20 years since the making of Do the Right Thing with the current snapshot depicted in the film Crash. Crash and Do the Right Thing both look at how people's frustrations can often be directed along lines of race and culture.

Several stories interweave during two days in Los Angeles involving a collection of inter-related characters, a police detective with a drugged out mother and a thieving younger brother, two car thieves who are constantly theorizing on society and race, the white district attorney and his irritated and pampered wife, a racist white veteran cop (caring for a sick father at home) who disgusts his more idealistic younger partner, a successful Hollywood director and his wife who must deal with the racist cop, a Persian-immigrant father who buys a gun to protect his shop, a Hispanic locksmith and his young daughter who is afraid of bullets, and more.
